Have you ever fell for a scam or been ripped off? I hear all the time about people falling for scams and such. It is amazing to me at what some people will fall for...BUT sometimes some thieves will get real clever.
What's the story...have you or do you know anyone that has?

Scammed? Ummm... well... I once got my debit card number stolen, from a transaction through Yahoo. Someone took the number and bought a couple of things on eBay. Not very expensive things... but I eventually got the charges reversed.
Oh, then there was the time I was contacted by phone, supposedly by a company handling Federal grants. This guy informed me that I had a Federal grant coming to me (even though I'd never applied for one  ). All they needed was my routing and checking account number! I never gave it to him.

lol yeah ive got a lot of those calls, my family makes it a habit to make these really weird excuses, like i pretend to be 13 and pregnant, or my brother is having seizures, when they call. so when they say, "can i speak to the woman of the house" and i say, "I AM THE WOMAN" and they say, "you sound 13, were so sorry" and i say, "i am 13 but ive made a lot of mistakes in my life" and then theyre like..."ooh...well... err..." lol works every tiem

yeah that was a good way to get rid of them. lol
When I asked the question, I was thinking about how I hear so many people getting scammed by people claiming to have millions and they are in a foreign country and have been wronged somehow and need your help to get their money back...and if you help (by sending some of your money) they will give you a big % of their money??? (There are several variations of the story) I can't believe people really fall for those scams...but it seems like many must fall for it...because they are still circulating and thriving??
Also, I knew of several friends and family members that got scammed by fake credit card companies. You send in a fee..and they will send you your card...which never comes??

One of my EX boyfriends scammed me big time..
Short version...
He stole my bank card, got out about £500, about £150 worth of money I had in my room at the time and ran off...I went to his house as soon as I realised and surprise surprise he'd moved..
If that wasn't bad enough a friend who knew about this needed help to pay rent..about £300 he convinced me to lend it to him and he would pay me back...Hmmmm, yeh he ripped me off as well..
So as you can imagine I have very little trust in people when money is concerned now.
Thankfully I know I have friends now that would never do that to me.
I just think of myself as being very very unlucky at the time

wow!! That is awful!!! yeah that is a hard lesson to learn. Never loan out money that you can't do without!! It's bad enough when someone steals from you...but when you loan out money and people (you think you can trust) and they don't pay it back...it is a terrible breach of trust. You want to be helpful.... but at the same time you do not want to be scammed. One of my EX boyfriends scammed me big time..

Yeah, It makes it worse because he did it right after my EX did that to me..Some friend that was..I think though I may have just been very very stupid...But it was years ago now and I will not be so silly again.

Ok, well I have two stories for ya'. The first was with this...particular computer company. I had called them up trying to get a computer. They offered me all kinds of extras, for what they were trying to say was only a few dollars more each time. Then they said I qualified to get financing on the whole thing. I completed picking everything out. They said "Ok, your all set. Just one more thing real quick. You just got to talk to these people in our finance department...and just answer a few quick question and you'll be done. We'll get it shipped out to you." I was like thinking that wasfair enough. So I talk to them, answer the same questions again I had already been asked...and they told me I didn't qualify...for anything. Well, long story short they jerked me around kept telling me "Oh this can be all fixed. All you gotta do is call this person instead." I finally had enough and gave up. Later, I find out they are being sued by the people in my state. They told all these people with near perfect credit they qualified for low (or no) interest financing. Only to switch up on them later and tell them they didn't qualify and try to force them to pay a very high interest rate. So, it seems I was kinda lucky. :) (The other story in a bit)

Ok...situation number two. I saw this ad online. It was this place advertising that you could make $15/hour (7.56 British pounds) (11.16 Euros). (Trying to be international hehe). Anyway...that is a lot of money to me. More than I've ever gotten before. So I decided to apply. I get called in for an interview and I do end up with the job. It is then I find out…that $15/hour…is that you get $15 every time you do a presentation. (It was a sales job…selling these fancy, overpriced knives) because each presentation should last about an hour. The other thing I never realized is that they were wanting you to “practice” first on your family. Which involves spending an hour putting the hard sell on them. At the end you must ask them to give you the names and phone numbers of at least 5 others they think that might be interested. It seemed to me like you were holding them hostage and not leaving until they sold out all their friends. The knives were ok. They did work pretty well. But at $599 for an average set (301.79 pounds, 445.65 Euros) …I thought it rather excessive. They anticipated that, so they had a list of other knife companies, their costs, what their knives were like etc. For all this work and studying and memorizing and pressuring and pushing people. All you got was $15 for every presentation or 10% of your sale (minus whatever free stuff you gave. They encouraged you to give as little as possible). I felt like there was no way in good conscience I could harass my family, encourage them to sell out friends and neighbors and encourage others to do likewise. And there was no way I wanted to work for a company like that.
YES! I have been scammed. :( I recently bought clothing from a website I've never heard of. The site looked legit and had a bunch of awesome stuff so I thought, "what the heck?" I placed an order and my total came to $73.00. I also ordered next day air which costs 20 dollars extra. Oh, and this took place on Tuesday, October 23, 2007.
Finally Friday comes rolling along and NO package. I called the customer service line and left countless messages. Still no answer or call back. It even got to point where I was guessing extention numbers because no one would answer the phone. I also contacted my bank to see if the charge went through and it did, of course.
SO here came Saturday. I went to my bank and made a claim against them. My bank assured me that the money would be put into my account within 2-3 business days. I feel better about it, but they scammed the hell out of me!

Oh not very nice at all Pink!
To date I haven't been scammed by anyone online.
I have been scammed by so called friends in the past. They asked for money or I let them use my credit card for things they wanted in a magazine. I would do it for them with the agreement that they would pay me back. At the least pay me something towards the purchases every time they got paid. Well, it wound up I had to pay for a couple "friends" purchases on my CC & 1 person in particular I had to EMBARASS in front of a bunch of people & threaten with a lawsuit before I got my money. I learned very quickly NEVER to loan out money again.
so sorry to hear that Pink
I am with you on that Sapphire
I made a loan to a friend some time back he said he would pay me back only he never said what year.
So I dont loan money to anyone now.
Yea, I'm still P.O.'ed about it. I do loan out money to a few people.. Meaning 1 or 2. But they are very trust worthy and always pay me back. I have borrowed money from them several times in the past so they are reliable.
