Tuxette's thread about "What is this world coming to?" started me thinking about this. Certainly, it's a topic that can be rather volatile... many have differing opinions about it. There is no doubt that society in general is slowly (or quickly, however you see it) deteriorating. Why do you think this is? Let's hear some of your thoughts...

i think society is always thought of to be deteriorating... in the 20s, it was the alcohol hence the prohibition, the 50s started womens rights, which was thought of to be deteriorating, same with some whites who thought society was going to Hell for letting blacks in at schools and such... i dont know, perhaps im an optimist, but i dont think everythings shot to it, i think in every society there are horrific parts and wonderful parts, so i just try to cultivate the wonderful.

Yeah, I think it's headed downhill with everything from the simple...like the shear lack of manners in today's children. The lack of control people seem to have over their kids.

Then there's the fact that nobody seems capable of solving their problems these days without a specific tv show. There's all those "clean house" shows to declutter people and get them to clean up. There's shows like "Nanny 911" for people with out of control kids. The list goes on.

Shows for your marriage, shows to break up, shows to hook up, shows to get rich, shows to get pranked etc.

So much "reality tv" people don't know what really is reality.

Law enforcement is these days armed with all sorts of tools to catch and convict criminals, who are then set free on a technicality.

Not saying it's a horrible world to live in, but I do think we re on a downward trend.

I don't mean to seem so negative. That same technology also helps free those who were wrongfully convicted. Also, I know those "technicalities" are there as protection against wrongful arrest and imprisonment.

Though I am horrified the way today's children act. They have no respect for their parents or anyone in authority. Parent's aren't sure how to discipline their kids. Can't send the kid to their room...with their computer, tv, video games etc, they'd probably like it. Take things away from them, or raise your voice and they are screaming child abuse. It's crazy.

My generation wasn't a whole lot better. But, when we received gifts...we wrote thank-you notes. We behaved in resteraunts. Sending us to our room was a real punishment. Of course as we all became teens there was the usual rebelling (well, my siblings but not me). But still...we might've had our scrapes, but we never hit or assaulted our parents. We never went to jail...or even got arrested. (my siblings got close a couple times though. lol)

Todays kids have it all, but still want it all and never seem greatful. My ex-husband has like 8 nieces and nephews who are all spoiled rotten. They can't/won't sit still or behave in public. They just expect gifts and never say thank you. Their parents allow them to run wild with little or no control. My sister's kids have at least some manners.

Sorry to run on and on.
