I've posted quite a few, lately I've been enjoying listening to silence at night. No that's not a name of a song, just enjoying the silence, relax my mind, breathe, and hear the leaves weaving in the wind. Occasional cars driving pass on the streets, people talking about in other houses in the neighborhood.

It's a form of relaxation where I feel peaceful, things are more clear and calm.

Aww poor meerkat! Are they still arguing?

I share an office with my boss & another employee. When my boss is at work, I hear sports talk most of the day. OR Darn near all of his employees coming in to "talk" to him about work related stuff. I'm convinced though that many of them don't really have work related problems, they want a chance to get away from their desk & shoot the breeze with the boss. I've learned to tune them all out. :D

I'm chillaxin' at this moment after having such a busy day today. Currently listening to Brahms' Symphony No. 4 on CD ... just got back from a concert, and somehow got the Brahms bug! :p

My wife and I just arrived home about 45 minutes ago. After work this evening, I picked up my wife to attend a symphony orchestra performance. The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra - under the direction of internationally renowned pianist/conductor Myung-Whun Chung - is scheduled to perform tomorrow at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in Manhattan, to celebrate United Nations Day. But before the big day tomorrow, they were scheduled to perform this evening (by invitation only) at the New York Presbyterian Church in Long Island City, Queens and I was fortunate to get tickets to it.

The orchestra opened the concert with a lively performance of the Overture to Verdi's opera, "La forza del Destino." After tuning their instruments further, it was immediately followed by a performance of Brahms' colossal Symphony No. 2 in D Major. There were instances where I felt somewhat annoyed when people clapped in between movements, but oh well, it happens. Nevertheless, the overall performance was the type I would pay big bucks for a seat in either Carnegie Hall or the Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Maestro Chung and the orchestra even gave an encore performance of Brahms' Hungarian Dance #1. What an awesome show! :)

Before heading straight home, we stopped by our favorite Japanese restaurant for some sushi and warm sake. :D

From Leonard Bernstein to Sir Colin Davis, there are dozens of critically acclaimed conductors with their respective orchestras. As per Myung-Whun Chung, I strongly recommend his recording of the Turangalila Symphonie of the late Olivier Messiaen. Here's the link to check it out:
http://www.amazon.com/Olivier-Messiaen-Turangalila-Symphonie/dp/B000001GF6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/104-8723634-1984762?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1193197739&sr=8-4

I'm currently listening to the famous masterpiece "Adagio for Strings" by American composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981). I was first introduced to this piece many years ago after watching the Oliver Stone classic film, Platoon.

The piece is just so full of emotion. There is so much longing, tension, alienation and distress, and yet, a feeling of renewed hope, peace and triumph. If you get the chance, give this 7-minute piece a (must) listen ... you'll be glad that you did. :)

Here's the link:
http://www.lovelandia.com/archive/Adagio_For_Strings

After listening to it, you can PM me your e-mail addy and I'll be more than happy to share the mp3 to you. :)

I currently have four versions of this piece:
1) New York Philharmonic (Leonard Bernstein, conductor)
2) Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (Sir Neville Marriner, conductor)
3) Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (Raymond Leppard, conductor)
4) New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (James Sedares, conductor)

I'm currently listening to Verdi's 'Aida' on compact disc. I'm not much of an opera person, and while it's good to listen to on a recording, I think it's best appreciated when performed live. Currently listening to Bernard Herrmann's composition for the Alfred Hitchcock classic film, "Psycho." It's part of their Halloween edition of Evening Music on NPR (National Public Radio). Those razor-sharp, slashing strings of the score either works like a dream or a nightmare. The music feeling as edgy and colorless as the noir-ish black-and-white photography. Those deadly blows from the basses and cellos effectively captures the famous shower scene from the film. Listening to it feel like I'm driving in the middle of the night heading towards a big house with the "Welcome to The Bates Motel" swinging on its main entrance. hehehe

Last Saturday night, me and my wife, along with my sisters-in-law were heading home from our day trip in Connecticut. That was when the wife started to fiddle with the radio dial, and end up with the Delilah show. I'm sorry, but it was perhaps the most painful 2-hour drive I had to endure as I listened through sappy stories from the individuals who called to have their voice heard on the air, and so were the songs that either accompanied or dedicated to.

Four girls and only one of me, I had no choice but to suck it up. :o Never realized that there's strength in numbers ... sheesh!

I agree! The knowledge of the arts belongs to everyone, but Jazz is a true American art form, besides being great music. Even some of the great classical composers: Bernstein, Gershwin, Copland, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Ravel, etc. have incorporated elements of jazz into their music. On the other side of the coin, the great jazz artists/composers - Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, among others - have incorporated classical elements into their music, bringing a breath of fresh air and knowing that it is here to stay, and will be around for many generations to come.

Right now: I'm listening to the album "Camp Meeting" by Bruce Hornsby, Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette.

Don't dismiss Mr. Hornsby (just yet) as being a one-hit wonder with his former band The Range, and his affiliations with the legendary band The Grateful Dead. Hornsby does have the chops, and can deliver great jazz music, alongside jazz stalwarts Christian McBride (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums). What makes this special was that I got to see these guys perform live; meet them in person after the show (even had a pretty good chat with them); and then have my ticket stub, hat and a CD autographed by them. :)

Just arrived home, but while I was out on the road giving my wife a ride to work, I was listening to WQXR - the classical music station here in New York City.

They broadcasted Charlie Chaplin's music - a medley arranged from his two films - City Lights and Modern Times. I knew that Chaplin wrote most of the music for his silent films, but this was my first time hearing it without seeing the films, as it was being performed by a chamber ensemble.

This might sound corny, but I was moved with what I was listening. I could still vividly remember the music passage in City Lights, when Chaplin (the tramp) first laid his eyes on this blind girl peddling flowers on a corner sidewalk, and fell in love ...
